The Secret to Excellence from SVTECH’s Veteran PM

With nearly 4 years of experience at SVTECH, always pushing the limits, Mr. Hoàng Văn Duy (Project Manager – VP Hanoi) has distilled 3 key “secrets” to achieving EXCELLENCE as a Project Manager (PM).

Do Your Best in Every Little Thing

If you’re curious about what a PM does, the answer is 1001 tasks, big and small. “You need to know how to draft a memorandum for approval, as well as create a detailed plan for a large project, step by step,” Mr. Duy shared.

Of course, managing such a massive workload is not something that can simply be “done with routine.” The IT and telecommunications industries change daily, and new products are constantly being introduced. This requires a PM to be quick to understand and adapt, as well as having a far-reaching vision to plan both personal and professional tasks. Especially recently, with economic downturns and market fluctuations, there are many challenges that PMs face when managing new product projects, which are becoming much more complex and difficult.

To tackle this challenge, Mr. Duy’s secret is to “always give your best, with full dedication, even in the smallest tasks.” According to him, to gain the satisfaction and trust of customers, no matter how large the workload, it is essential not to cut corners. One must always pay attention and stay focused at all times.

Identifying himself as a perfectionist, Mr. Duy admitted that at times he has felt pressure created by his own standards, as he strives to ensure the best quality in his work. “But on the flip side, this very pressure has helped me continuously raise my standards, and it becomes a daily motivation to EXCEL,” he said.

Finish What You Start

When reflecting on significant milestones in his career, Mr. Duy recalls two years ago when the pandemic was at its peak, and he managed four key projects for the company. “I worked 13-14 hours a day, and this continued for months. There was a time when my manager even said that this might be too much for me (laughs),” he shared.

But those very words became the motivation for him to push through and prove himself. As a result, the projects were completed successfully, to the point where, back then, Mr. Duy became an unofficial leader in the eyes of his colleagues. Whenever any issues arose, everyone turned to him for advice. In 2023, he officially became the Team Leader of PM at Viettel.

“I still remember a colleague telling me when I first joined the company: ‘Once you are trusted with a task, you must complete it no matter what.’ This quote has guided me to this day and reminds me to always work with the spirit that, once you start, you must give your best,” Mr. Duy shared.

He also emphasized that finishing what you start is not about merely fulfilling responsibilities, but about truly partnering with the client, doing things with integrity, and supporting the customer at all times.

Want to EXCEL? You Must UNDERSTAND First

Many people might think that talking is easy, but doing it is much harder. So, what motivates us to “do our best” and “finish what we start”? Mr. Duy said: “To do that, we must UNDERSTAND the value of the work we are doing.” The importance of UNDERSTANDING is immense. Only when we understand can we know where we stand, what we are doing, and how we are contributing to the team. We understand the significance of every single task we take on. Once we understand, we will no longer see “difficulties and obstacles,” but only new “challenges” that help us “level up.”

“Gen Z often has a mindset of fear and is reluctant to share the problems or difficulties they’re facing. I think this is not ideal. To me, even the smallest task is an important link in a project. If you don’t share, the consequences can be much greater,” Mr. Duy shared.

He also added, “At SVTECH, Gen Z also has many opportunities for development and plenty of support from the company and management (such as the work environment and company culture). With this, combined with your greatest asset – youth and enthusiasm, you can go further and soar higher, as long as you appreciate the opportunities and give your best effort.”

We hope Mr. Duy will continue to maintain his passion and dedication to contribute and innovate. We also hope that through Mr. Duy’s story of EXCELLENCE above, you have found some unique sources of inspiration for yourselves.
