In 2020, the people of the Southwest region faced the most severe drought and salinity in history. SVTECH did not stand idly by. After consulting the opinions and contributions of all SVTECHers regarding the location to install the water filtration system to support the people of the Southwest, with a consensus rate of up to 99%, the “land of coconuts” – Ben Tre – officially became the destination for SVTECH’s support project. The water filtration system was installed at the Hung Chanh Hamlet Cultural House, Chau Hung Commune, Binh Dai District, Ben Tre Province.
During the survey process for implementation, SVTECH had to choose between a system with a capacity of 1,000 liters/hour and another system with a higher capacity that could serve a larger number of users.
The goal was to balance SVTECH’s own desire to provide the maximum amount of clean water to the people against the local government’s financial capacity to ensure the system’s operation and maintenance. Additionally, there was the challenge of how to exploit the input water source to minimize environmental impact in case drilling a well became necessary.
The second system, if implemented, would have encountered several difficulties such as:
- The water supply requirement was very large and difficult to guarantee.
- Operating costs (electricity bills) were high, potentially reaching 20 million VND/month (exceeding the payment capacity of the vast majority of local people).
- Furthermore, with a sparse population density and the lack of an existing clean water distribution system, high capacity concentrated in one location was not the optimal solution.
Therefore, after discussions between the local government, the manufacturer, and the equipment supplier—Viet Nhat Environmental Science Joint Stock Company—SVTECH decided to select the system with a capacity of 1,000 liters/hour.
Amidst the complex developments of the COVID-19 pandemic and the nation’s social distancing measures, the implementation took place within safe limits, ensuring strict compliance with COVID-19 prevention and control.
Consequently, SVTECH selected an installation unit that met the technical requirements of the equipment and had resources and materials available near the locality so that the installation could proceed immediately upon receiving local consensus.
